The term spiral separator can refer to either a device for separating slurry components by density, or for a device for sorting particles by shape. Here, these are termed wet and dry spiral separators, respectively.

Spiral separator(Screw classifier):Wet Spiral Separators Spiral separators of the wet type, also called spiral concentrators, are devices to separate solid components in a slurry, based upon a combination of the solid particle density as well as the particle's hydrodynamic properties (e.g. drag). The device consists of a tower, around which is wound a sluice, from which slots or channels are placed in the base of the sluice to extract solid particles that have come out of suspension.
Typical Spiral separator concentrators will use a slurry from about 20%-40% solids by weight, with a particle size somewhere between 1.5-.075mm (17-340 mesh), though somewhat larger particle sizes are sometimes used. For good separation, the density difference between the heavy minerals and the light minerals in the feedstock should be at least 1 g/cm3 ; and because the separation is dependent upon size and density, spiral separators are most effective at purifying ore if its particles are of uniform size and shape. A spiral separator may process a couple tons per hour of ore, per flight, and multiple flights may be stacked in the same space as one, to improve capacity.
Spiral Classifier: is widely used for classifying all kinds of mineral according to the particle size in the mineral processing flow, and is also applicable for desliming and dehydrating in the mineral washing work. Generally, Classifier forms a closed process flow with ball mill. The classifier has the advantages of scientific structure, reliable working stability, and convenient operation, etc.
Working Theory of Spiral Classifier
The Spiral Classifier depends on different deposition speed of solid particle due to their size difference and weight difference. Thin mineral particle can float in the water and flow out, and the coarse mineral particle will deposit into the bottom of the cell, which is pushed up by screw and discharged. Classifier is a kind of mechanical classifying equipment. Classifier can filtrate the powdery materials grinded by ball mill, transport the coarse materials into inlet with screw, and discharge the filtrated fine materials through overflow pipe.
Operating Principle of Air Classifiers
The airflow of Air Classifiers conveys the material from below between the external and internal envelope and subsequently reaches the upper part of the separator. The air while passing through the blades of Screw Classifiers, which are regulated, from the outside of the separator assume a rotary motion and enter the central cone.
With the centrifugal effect in Air Classifiers the coarse Particles [the heavier ones] are accumulated on the bottom of central cone and are then conveyed through a suitable pipe. The fine grade of the material is transported by the air leaving the Separator of Screw Classifiers and is adjustable within very ample limits by operating manually on the inclination of the blades.
